Aluminium oxide has become widely used in ballistic threat defence as a material with a high protective performance at low weight

The strong protective effect of Aluminium oxide arises from the nullification of threatening projectiles on impact as well as dissipation of a large part of the kinetic energy. 

Modern ballistic protection is based on composite armour where ceramic plates are bonded with a protective fabric to form a module. Optimum protection requires a coordinated system. Special plate geometries best meet the requirements of protection against multiple ballistic threats.
